Birding

Our Southern Berg region is blessed with abundant as well as endemic bird-life; a treasure for both the avid and casual birder.

We are fortunate to every summer enjoy the spectacle of a huge Amur Falcon roost, occupied by several thousands of these birds every evening  between about December - March, in the garden of the historic Magistrate's Residence located in the main road [Arbuckle St] of Himeville.

Also, the entire Sani Pass valley, officially designated an Important Birding Area [IBA SA064], comprising five birding habitats. From the bottom to the top as follows:

  1. Lower wetlands and grasslands (Dieu Donne Dam)
  2. Foothills (Nkomozana Lodge)
  3. Central Pass (S.A.Border control post/Polela)
  4. Upper switchbacks
  5. Lesotho Plateau

All five of these zones offer an exciting suite of bird species or spectacular fauna and flora and always spectacular scenery.

Specials to look out for Bush Blackcap, Barratt's Warbler, Drakensberg Siskin, Drakensberg Rock-jumper, Gurney's Sugarbird, Fairy Flycatcher, Sentinel Rock-Thrush, Cape Vulture , Bearded Vulture, Mountain & African Rock-Pipits, Layard's Tit-Babbler and Grey Tit.
